Our amalgam and composite resin fillings are very good for small or medium sized cavities in back teeth. However, they may not be strong enough to repair larger cavities as your back teeth come under a lot of pressure whenever you chew food. In this case, we may suggest you have an inlay or onlay. These are larger fillings that can repair quite large areas of decay or damage, restoring strength and structure to your tooth.
What is an Inlay or Onlay?
An inlay or onlay is a beautiful filling made from porcelain and it is very hard wearing, strong and stain resistant. Once in place, it will be virtually invisible and should last for many years. An inlay is ideal for restoring the central part of the chewing surface. An onlay is slightly larger than an inlay and will restore not only the central area, but also one or more of the tooth cusps on the outer edges of the tooth. Inlays and onlays are indirect fillings as they have to be made in a laboratory. You will need two visits to South Yarra Family Dental Care, as your tooth will need to be prepared and the inlay or onlay can be fitted and cemented in place during your next visit.
